Greater boston Mathematics League (gBML)

High School mathematics League Competition

in the Greater Boston Area

The November Meet is the first OFFICIAL GBML Meet of 2020 - 2021

The meet is scheduled for November 12 or 13, 2020.  Normally, the GBML schedules the monthly meets on Wednesday for consistency. This month, Veteran’s day falls on the Wednesday. So, this month, the meet will take place on Thursday or Friday.  Please note, all of your competing students will need to participate in the meet on either Thursday the 12th or Friday the 13th. We cannot facilitate a situation where some students from a certain team take the meet on Thursday while others take it on Friday.

See the meet categories document for a list of the topics which will be covered at the meet.

Please see the league rules document. This document has recently been revised and streamlined to reflect the significant modifications needed for this school year.

Proctoring the November Meet:

OPTION 1 - League Wide administration of the meet on Thursday, November 12, 2020 - 4:00pm

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Michael Curry will be providing timing and scoring services to the entire league using Zoom.  A Zoom invitation will be sent to the coaches of record in the GBML.  Students and coaches who wish to participate can tune in.  This is optional. For each round, a timer will be provided on the screen.  It won’t be possible to monitor the students, see the timer, and see the questions at the same time. A two minute warning will be given and then a 15 second warning. Once the round is over, a minute or two will be provided for students to get ready for he next round.  A bit of trust is needed for this concept to work.  Students will be expected to complete the questions without assistance of any kind.  If we all decide to play fairly, this should be a nice event for the students.  Note, the chat function of Zoom will be off during the meet.  Coaches, look for an invitation to the Zoom administration of the meet in your email. If you do not receive it, please contact Michael Curry at currymath@gmail.com. The students will submit their answers directly to the GBML via a Google form.  Note, coaches will be asked to proctor their own students during the team round in “Breakout Rooms.” Since all of the answers are submitted directly to the GBML, the coach will not need to grade any papers. The forms that the students will need to submit their answers are below. Note, the question files are the same for both options 1 and option 2.

Here is the Zoom link that coaches and students need for the League Wide administration of the meet at 4:00pm on November 12, 2020.  Click here to join the meet.

OPTION 2 - Self Proctoring on either Thursday, November 12, 2020 or Friday November 13, 2020

You and your students participate on your own on either Thursday, November 12th or Friday November 13th. In this case, the coach will grade the papers and summarize the scoring. The coach will then upload the scores using the Google form below. Coaches are encouraged to develop a method for proctoring the meet using a web-conferencing service such as Zoom or WebEx.  We envision that this process would be similar to proctoring an exam in a hybrid learning model.  The password protected question files are provided below.  You can provide these files to the students in advance of the meet.  When all students are on your screen in “Brady Bunch” style, you can then provide the password to the students using the chat function of the web-conferencing service. Then you can keep track of the time (10 minutes per round). Announce a two minute warning and a 15 second warning.  Then provide a minute or two for the students to enter their answers into the google form described above.  Repeat for the 5 rounds and the team round.  If some students are at home and some students are present in your classroom, you can proctor them all at once. Note: All students on a particular team must compete at the same time.  The GBML cannot facilitate a split schedule where some students participate at one time while others participate at another time. Note, the question files are the same for both options.
